Tiger Spotting in the Mangroves of Sundarbans National Park

The Sundarbans is the world’s largest mangrove forest. The Sundarbans even has the highest tiger density of any national park in the world. Nearly 10% of the tigers living in the wild live in the Sundarbans, where they are notorious for regularly devouring people who live here! The Sundarbans National Park covers 10,000 square kilometers of land and water in the Ganges delta. More than half of this area is in India, the rest in Bangladesh. Located at the mouth of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers between India and Bangladesh, the mangrove forests and waterways provide a wide range of fauna, including some endangered species. The habitat contains the largest population of tigers in the world, which have adapted to an almost amphibious life. The (Bengal) tigers are able to swim long distances and eat fish, crab and water monitors. In addition to tigers, there are more than 300 bird species, otters, monkeys, crocodiles, deer, boars and river dolphins. Along the way during the boat trip we can get off several times and take walks.

For our trip we’ll combine exploring the park by boat and also by hiking.  We will get off the boat several times to take walks through the area and to and in small hamlets along the water. The boat takes us through the major rivers and the smaller canals. Sometimes we will take a small boat trip to sail through the smaller channels to get closer to the shore and increase the chance of spotting game (including the tiger).

We will combine accommodation on the boat and also in cottages throughout the park.
