Discover The Backwaters: Floating Market And Kuakata Beach

Kuakata is a town in southern Bangladesh in the Patuakhali District known for its fantastic sandy 18-km beach from where you have splendid views over the Bengal Bay and some of the best sunsets in all of Bangladesh. It is known for the Rush Purnima and Maghi Purnima festivals which attracts many pilgrims who come to bade at the bay. There are several Buddhist temples in the area as well as ancient wells, Buddhist monasteries like the Shima Buddhist Monastery and east of Kuakata Beach we can find the largest Buddhist statue in South-Asia.

Kuakata Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Bangladesh and is still relatively unknown among foreign tourists. It’s here where we can also visit Kuakata National Park, 1,631 ha big and a safe zone for vultures. The park is called the ‘second Sundarban’ due to the proximity of the Sundarbans National Park on the west.

Kuakata Beach is locally known as Shagor Kannya, which means daughter of the ocean. The long, wide strip of marbled sand stretches for about 18 kilometers and has a typical natural setting with gentle slopes into the Bay of Bengal. Besides being a refuge for vultures, Kuakata Beach is also a sanctuary for migratory winter birds. On the eastern end of the beach we find Gongamati Reserved Forest, an evergreen mangrove forest and snippet of the original Kuakata and larger Sundarbans. The forest can be reached on foot or by bike through the beach and is ideal to be visited during the late afternoon to see the sun cast shadows on the exposed mangrove roots and the fishing boats sail near the coastline.
